Activity highlights

1) Syntagma Square

We start our walking tour at Syntagma Square ("Constitution Square"), which is the central square of Athens. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on September 3, 1843. It is located in front of the 19th-century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934.

Highlight: Gleaming with white marble and beautiful statues, the square is a magnet for people, locals and tourists.

2) We continue our walking tour, on Ermou street.
Ermou Street ("Hermes Street") is one of the first roads designed in modern Athens and one of the main arteries of Athens' first town plan. Thanks to this fact, we can still admire numerous neoclassical buildings while crossing Ermou Street. Nowadays, it is a base for shopping, cafes and hotels.

Highlight: One of the oldest churches in Athens, the Byzantine Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea is in a small square on Ermou Street.

3) We are now continuing the tour heading to Agia Eirini square, a neighborhood dear to locals, situated behind the former Cathedral Church of Athens, Agia Eirini.

4) We pass through Psiri, the alternative neighborhood full of street art. Once known for its small industries nowadays it is mostly known for vivid nightlife and street food locales. It is an area loved by locals and it is also characterized by its secondhand market teeming with jewelry, furniture, clothing, books, etc.

5) Right after that, our walking tour enters Abyssinia square (flea market). Athens' rich cultural heritage is reflected in the wares found in its markets. In Abyssinia Square, you will find a wide variety of treasures. The diverse cultural history of Athens is represented in many of the items, from traditional Greek embroidery to Ottoman glassware to pottery from the Aegean. There are also vintage books, rare medical and musical instruments, maps, silverware and furniture for sale.

6) Then passing through the cobbled alleys of Monastiraki square, we reach Plaka’s main street, Adrianou Street, the ideal place for souvenir hunting.

7) Then Mnisikleous street, with its famous “stairs”, introduces us to the neighborhood of Plaka. Strolling among its labyrinth streets, we will explore Plaka’s hidden squares, marvel at the elegant architecture of the surrounding buildings and small chapels and witness the charm and alluring ambiance of the oldest neighborhood in Athens.

Highlights:
Plaka has rightfully gained its nickname as the “Neighborhood of the Gods” as it’s built for the large part on top of the ancient city of Athens and it’s nestled right below the Acropolis among several monuments that still glow with the city’s erstwhile glory.

End of our walking tour:
We end the walking tour right in the heart of Plaka leaving you in the perfect place to continue exploring the glorious city of Athens and delving into the local culture. Here you can admire impressive architecture, visit world-class museums or archaeological sites, and enjoy high-end gastronomy…
